Protests start up again in Iran

It was President Ahmadinejad’s most recent speech and the fact that it’s the 10th anniversary of the student protests that motivated the masses in Tehran again. The Los Angeles Times reports that crowds of protesters are clashing with security forces on the streets of Tehran again.

The screams of a woman being beaten could be heard from nearby buildings, a witness said. Business owners could be seen hustling protesters into their buildings to shield them from plainclothes officers and anti-riot police who fired tear gas canisters (…) But as the militiamen tried to drag away demonstrators, one witness said, protesters joined together to overpower them and rescue their comrades. The witness also said he saw some women with their headscarves pulled off being forced into police vans. Another woman taking pictures with her cellphone camera was dragged away.

Oh yes, they’re beating men and women alike. Good to know that in this respect, the regime sees both genders as equal!

Whereas earlier in the protests, there were videos showing protesters helping injured riot police, the tide has turned. Here’s a video posted earlier this month. I’m not sure when it was shot — it’s marked July 3, but I couldn’t find any reports of protests from that day, so i’ts probably older. What’s interesting is that at the start of the clip, a man off camera is yelling at a guard, “Open this gate! Oh, you’re (a) big (man) now? You raise your hand to a woman? You’re big now? You kick a woman?” And later, when the crowd descends on a guard on the street below, a group either on a balcony or a rooftop cheers, using rather colorful language, encourage the protesters below to “kill him!”
